Email Memos on freenode

Posted on June 7th, 2008 in Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

Email Memos are one of the many great new features in use on freenodes shiny new services.

Memoserv is a widely underused feature of IRC, and one which I find very helpful.  Memoserv allows you to send a “memo” to a person, if they are either not online, or away from their keyboard.

The command is simply:
/msg memoserv send <nick> <your message>

Memoserv will store the message, and when the user connects to freenode, and identifies with services, they will see they have a message(s).

With freenode’s new services, freenode users have the option to have memos forwarded to their email address (of course, you need to set an email address on your nick).

To use this option, simply use the command:
/msg NickServ SET EMAILMEMOS ON

You’ll receive an email that looks like:

Vorian,

You have a new memo from Vorian.

Thank you for your interest in the freenode IRC network.

If you frequent freenode, I hope you find this function as useful as I do. :)

Wrapping up one week of MOTU training.

Posted on January 3rd, 2008 in Uncategorized | 11 Comments »

I set a goal midway through last year to become a MOTU. After a few attempts, and frustrated days trying to figure out what the heck cdbs or diff.gz or any of the developers jargon is, my interest in maintaining weaned.

With the new year starting, (and a few days off of work) I decided to put a full force effort into my goal of becoming a MOTU. With big thanks to many people in #ubuntu-motu and #kubuntu-devel, I am approaching a point that I will actually know what I don’t know. :)
I spent the first bit of the week reacquainting myself with packaging basics, and the packaging process. What I should have also done is also familiarize myself with contributing.

I spent a good bit of the week anoying sponsors by not following the proper bug managment process in Launchpad, but I can say with confidence I will follow the proper process from now on.

All and all, it’s been a great week. I am excited about actually getting a couple of package updates uploaded! I look forward to getting acclimated to the Debian control and rules files, and attempting a package from scratch.

P.S. If there are any MOTU teams out there that want help with grunt work, I’m all game.

Did you go?

This will be my last post about the Ohio Linux Fest for a while (I promise)

If you were able to attend the Ohio Linux Fest, what did you think about the Ubuntu Booth?  What did you like, what didn’t you like, what would you like to see or hear next time around. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Also If you have pictures, please share :)  You can post a link here or just email them to me.

Thanks!
